The park has rich bio-diversity notably blessed with over 350 bird species such as African finfoot, grey crowned crane, papyrus gonolek, white winged warbler, Yellow-rumped tinker bird, Double-toothed barbets, African water rail, white backed night heron, red-faced barbet, sunbirds and many more.

Things to do at the Lake Mburo National Park

Game Drives

Game drives are the park’s most popular activity, available as day or night excursions. Day drives are best at dawn (6:30AM Start) or late afternoon when animals are most active. Key tracks include the zebra track, kigambira loop trail, and lake trackside track, where visitors can spot zebras, impalas, buffaloes, giraffes (translocated from Murchison falls), and elands. Night drives (6:30 -7:00 PM start, 2-3hours duration) offer a chance to see nocturnal species like leopards (with a 50% sighting chance near Mihingo lodge), hyenas, genet cats, white-tailed mongooses, and bush pigs, guided by armed rangers with spotlights. Fees vary by residency: day drives cost $20 per foreign non-resident, $20 for foreign residents, and UGX20,000 for East African citizens; night drives cost $30, $30, and UGX 50,000 respectively.

Boat cruises

Boat trips depart from the jetty near Rwonyo camp, with morning (9:00 AM) and afternoon (2:00 PM) sessions lasting 2-3 hours. Cruise offers close-up views of hippos wallowing in the water, crocodiles basking on shores, and waterbucks or buffaloes grazing along the lake edge. bird enthusiasts can spot pelicans, herons, fish eagles, and possibly the rare shoebill stork or African finfoot.

Horseback Safaris

Exclusive to lake mburo, horseback safaris are offered by lodges like Mihingo lodge. Guided by experienced riders, visitors can navigate through savannas and woodlands, getting closer to wildlife than in vehicles- zebras, impalas, and even buffaloes often remain clam around horses.

Guided Nature Walks

Led by armed rangers and expert guides, walks explore areas like the salt lakes near Rwonyo, where a timber observation platform provides views of animals gathering to lick minerals. Walks also offer opportunities to spot birds. Butterflies, and small mammals, while learning about the park’s flora and conservation efforts.

Fishing is permitted at the lakeside campsite near Rwonyo for visitors with their own equipment (arranged in advance), offering a peaceful way to engage with the park’s waterways.

The surrounding Banyankole community, including Bahima herders and Bairu cultivators, invites visitors to learn about their traditions centred on Ankole long-horned cattle. Activities include community walks, traditional storytelling, cultural performance, and even assisting with cattle care, providing a glimpse into rural Ugandan life.

Getting to Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western region of Uganda, approximately 240 kilometers from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The most common way to get to the park is by road, either through private transport or public means. Visitors can also opt to fly to the park through nearby airports, such as Entebbe International Airport or Kasese Airstrip. Once you arrive, there are various accommodation options available, including lodges, campsites, and guesthouses.

Lake Mburo is conveniently located along the Kampala–Mbarara highway. From Kampala, the drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and stopovers. The main entrances are Nshara Gate (closest to Lyantonde) and Sanga Gate (near the Sanga trading center).

For travelers without their own vehicle, there are several reliable tour companies offering transfers and guided safaris. Many visitors choose to hire a car in Uganda to enjoy a flexible, comfortable, and hassle-free journey—especially if they plan to continue to other parks like Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Having a local driver who knows the terrain, park rules, and best routes ensures you make the most of your safari experience.

If you prefer more independence, a self-drive 4×4 rental is another excellent option. The roads are mostly tarmac up to the park gates, but a 4×4 is recommended for exploring inside the park, particularly during the rainy season.
